Description
We’ll start our exploration of the city center at the Spanish Steps, a monumental staircase that takes you from the piazza di Spagna, heart of the luxury shopping district of Rome, to the church of the Holy Trinity on the hills.
After a short and pleasurable stroll we’ll be in front of the Trevi Fountain, the biggest and most iconic fountain of the city. You’ll hear the story of how the fountain is still supplied by an aqueduct that is almost 2000 years old. Tossed a coin in the fountain (like tradition wants!) we’ll move on towards the Pantheon, walking trough the oldest shopping mall of the city and its art deco’ decoration: we may stop for there to try how real Italian espresso coffee taste like!
The Pantheon is one of the highlights of this tour: it’s the oldest and best preserved monument of the city that’s been in use for the last 1900 years with no interruption! Formerly a pagan temple dedicated to all the gods it’s been made into a church to Mary and the Martyrs and still enjoy the status of “basilica”. Learn about the incredible engineering skills that made it possible for the romans to build the majestic dome, still the biggest in the world of its kind, with the famous hole in the middle that lets in not only the sun light but also…rain! See the tomb of Raphael, the renaissance artists who lived a short (but very influential!) life not far from the tombs of the royal family.
Once left the Pantheon we’ll make our way towards Navona square, artist’s square and baroque gem of the city, with its tree fountains and the majestic St. Agnes church. Hear the story of the rivalry between the two greatest artists of the 17th century, Bernini and Borromini, that played their very own special artistic battle trough the monuments adorning the piazza.
We’ll end the tour in Campo dei fiori square, where the most important food market of the city is held everyday. It will be a great occasion to meet locals and learn more about the roman cuisine and experience the most authentic taste of the city.
Time will fly on this walking tour!
